Welcome to Mrs. DeSantis' Art Room!
We always try to have a little fun in art class. It's OK to have silly ideas, to be a little messy, and to experiment with art materials.
As a preface to each project, I usually introduce students to a cultural or historical artistic reference.
For example, in the third grade we look at the Cave Art in Lascaux, the earliest known art made by man. We also study traditional folk art of Mexico, Chinese New Year celebrations, and Japanese Sumi-e Ink Painting.
But we might also discuss the work of Keith Haring, a graffiti artist from the 1970's, Henri Rousseau's jungle paintings, and Pablo Picasso's portraits.
I occasionally integrate art lessons with learning in other classes. So students may be illustrating stories and poems they have written, painting the food pyramid, or making posters for our annual Fall Fair.
All of these ideas and references inform our own art-making and provide inspiration for joyful artistic experiments.
